Olive Oil for Skin: Nature's Best Moisturizer

Uncategorized Mar 21, 2017

Olive Trees in Thassos, Greece

Olive oil as skin care is an ancient beauty secret that the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans have been using for thousands of years.  It wasn't until this past weekend, however, that I actually experienced the true skin care powers of olive oil!

My Weekend Skin Care Dilemma

My family and I spent the past weekend at a house in which the dryness from the heating system was making us extremely uncomfortable.  My one-year-old would cry and point to her legs,...

There's A Water Warning In NYC

Nut Milks: An Easy Homemade Milk Alternative

Homemade Nut Milks: Easy and delicious!

After really enjoying nut milks made by some local restaurants, I finally bought a nut milk bag and started making my own at home. I was surprised by how easy it is and by how delicious they are even when I make them!

Both my three-year-old and one-year-old also really enjoy drinking (and making!) the nut milks.  So I love that they are an easy way to get my daughters to consume the healthy nutrients of nuts.

The photos below lay out a recent...

Uncategorized Mar 21, 2017

Here at The S File ™, we prefer to avoid taking medicine whenever possible.  Instead, we first try natural remedies that are often ancient-old healers.   We’ve all heard that vitamin C- packed foods are great immunity boosters, but when you’ve had enough OJ and grapefruit, what else can you turn to?  Here is a list of three of our favorite natural immunity boosters.

My Detox: Eve of Day 1

Beginning a new journey..

I'm very excited.  It's January 2011, a new year, a fresh beginning.  It feels like the beginning of a new chapter.

Having delivered my beautiful second daughter just over one year ago, at the end of 2009, I spent most of 2010 nursing and totally sleep-deprived.  No one seems to talk about this, but the post-natal period can often times be much harder than the pre-natal period!  I was lucky with my body's reaction to the delivery of my second...

My Cleanse: 4 Green Juices; 1 Spicy Lemonade, and 1 Cashew Milk (Yum!)

7:30 A.M.

I've been up since 5:50AM -- exhausted -- but feeling a nice buzz of energy that I don't normally experience (it's a juice - fast buzz).

Rushing to do a school tour so I drink about 2/3 of my first green juice for the day.  Am not hungry!

Just got home.  It's freezing in NYC!  I'm so tired that I'm really craving a large coffee. ...

My Cleanse: 4 Green Juices, 1 Spicy Lemonade, and 1 Cashew Milk (Yum!)

9:00 A.M.

I've been up for a few hours and I'm not that hungry.  I decide to start my digestive system with some plain Rooibus tea.  Oh, right.  I've been meaning to make an appointment with my friend, Cassie, who is a very knowledgeable colon therapist.  I'm a little nervous for a session, but, on some level, it makes sense that my body needs some help eliminating all that the juices are...

The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell

diet Mar 21, 2017

It's funny how a random encounter can significantly alter you... In my explorations of the raw diet, I went for my first colonic. During the session, my colon therapist, Cassie Karopkin, was naming a few books that she thought I would be interested in. One of them, The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell, has shed new light on my views on the link between disease and diet (more specifically, animal protein and disease).

"One of the most exciting...

Making Natural Dyes For Easter: A Health-Minded Science Project

Natural eggs

When it comes to Easter traditions, one of the most iconic is the dying of Easter eggs - and since there is no wrong way to decorate these holiday favorites, dying eggs is a perfect activity for the young ones in our families to enjoy. What many parents find not so perfect, however, are the chemicals used to produce the artificial dyes that are most often used in the coloring of eggs. Although the FDA concluded in 2011 that there is still not enough substantial evidence to warrant...
