BPA: Greens and Soy May Be An Effective Defense

Uncategorized Mar 21, 2017

The CDC estimates that right now BPA is in the bodies of 93 percent of Americans, with higher levels in teens than in adults, and higher levels in children than in teens.

BPA, commonly found in plastics, is a potent hormone disruptor that is increasingly linked to health effects like brain and behavior changes, cancer, and reproductive system damages.

Children are often times exposed through clear plastic baby bottles, toddler sippy cups, dental sealants, the interior coating of some food...

The Raw Diet: The Husband's Perspective

diet Mar 21, 2017

My husband wrote the following for BeamGreen during the summer of 2009.

Encouragement comes when you least expect it.

One morning, recently, I was waiting in line at my usual sidewalk coffee vendor when a homeless man came up to me and said, “You have really healthy skin! You need a little more vitamin D, but you look really healthy…  Want to buy me a cup of coffee?”

Background

Three months prior, I did not look as healthy. One day, I developed a major headache and my...

Tart Cherries for a Better Sleep

diet sleep Mar 21, 2017

Like so many adults, I have trouble sleeping.  While I don’t have trouble actually falling asleep, I spend the night tossing and turning, and waking up 3 – 4 times throughout the night.  The next day, I find myself exhausted!

tart cherry knudsenFor the longest time I have been looking for ways to promote a better sleep.  I tried to stay away from refined sugars, caffeine and electronic device screens before going to bed, but nothing seemed to work.  Then I came across a site that...

If you have been keeping up with The S File, you know that this is an exciting time for us.  Ms. S. is busy writing her first book, and this time is particularly exciting for me, as I'll be getting married in less than two months!  As you can imagine with only a few weeks to go, it seems as if my fiancé and I have never been busier.

Though my fiancé and I love to cook, our time limitations make it hard to eat well....

Reflections on My Most Significant Health Changes in 2009

Uncategorized Mar 21, 2017

My calendar year 2009 was eventful. During the first half of this year, my seemingly healthy husband was under intensive care for a few days in the hospital for a spontaneous carotid artery dissection; I experienced two miscarriages; I resigned from my hard-earned career to be more available for our family; and we completed our first Manhattan nursery school application process. The last half of our year has been blessed with my husband embracing radical health changes and, therefore, being...

Pre-August 2008 Sigg Bottles Contain BPA

Uncategorized Mar 21, 2017

The Sigg company just recently admitted that its pre-August 2008 bottles have contained BPA, but demonstrated no leaching of BPA. It's infuriating that the company would mislead health-conscious consumers about its products for the sake of sales. As I learn more about industries in general (specifically, I've recently been learning more about the animal and dairy industries), I'm appalled at how often the public is misled -- with sometimes serious health consequences at stake -- all for the...

Mattress Revelations

baby bedroom children nursery Mar 21, 2017

It had not occurred to me that my daughter's mattress may be hazardous until I can across literature on this after we had spent a few hundred dollars on a brand new mattress. As of this writing, my daughter is 22 months old and I recently had to purchase a second crib mattress for a summer rental. As such, I have only recently started delving into what to avoid in mattresses. I knew that there was discussion on toxins in mattresses but lived in denial until recently. I had been afraid to...

Juice Cleanse Reflection

diet Mar 21, 2017

In mid-December 2010, Ms. C completed her first juice cleanse, a 3-day BluePrintCleanse! Her experience, with some hindsight, follows below. I am starting Day 1 of my 3-day cleanse today! I'm so excited to cleanse and will be sharing my experience as well. For now, please read below to check out the first juice cleanse of a recent college grad.

-- Ms. S

Now that it's been a few weeks since I completed my 3-Day BluePrintCleanse juice cleanse, I can honestly assess the highs and lows of my...

How to Stay Fed and Satisfied on a Budget, by a GLOWING Raw Foodie

Uncategorized Mar 21, 2017

When I first dived into the raw diet a year ago, I was struck by how expensive it was to eat this healthy.  My friend, Cassie, who always inspires me to eat as cleanly as she does (partly because her skin is so clear and radiates) said that it doesn't have to be so pricey.  Below, she shares her tips on eating cleanly without going broke!

Not only am I a thrifty shopper, but I'm also a lazy chef.  Ironically, I'm in culinary school at the Natural Gourmet Institute to really...

Fresh Herbs: Great for Taste AND Health!

diet Mar 21, 2017

  3-Fresh-Herbs-in-the-Kitchen

One of my greatest simple joys is having a constant supply of fresh herbs in my kitchen.  For me, fresh herbs send the overall flavor of my food to the next level, and quickly become the highlight to many of my “famous” dishes.  It’s easy to love herbs for their taste and versatility, but as it turns out, certain herbs can provide us with wonderful health benefits too.  So next time you’re enjoying the herbs in your favorite dishes, take a moment...
