I used to think that EMFs were a concern to those who have certain situations, like living near power lines. I now know that the most common known cause of EMF (electromagnetic frequency) exposure to the average person is the use of cell phones and other wireless devices. Yet, as we endlessly scroll through social media and make countless phone calls to our friends and family, many people are still unaware of the EMF danger levels they are exposing themselves to.
An even greater number of people are unaware of the EMF danger levels from the appliances in their homes. Everyday electrical appliances like televisions, hair dryers, baby monitors, washing machines, and the biggest threat: the microwave oven.
Many home appliances emit non-ionizing radiation which can create an unhealthy environment in your home. In general, the higher the frequency and the closer you are to the source, the more dangerous it is.
Below is more from my editorial team.
EMFs are invisible forces of energy associated with the use of electrical power and everyone experiences different levels of sensitivity to EMF exposure. You may be surprised to find that many of our everyday appliances emit EMFs.
EMF danger levels are generally at their highest in the kitchen but other rooms are affected too depending on your use of home electronics.
To understand the impact of EMFs, it’s important to know what constitutes high and low exposures.
EMFs are measured in milliGauss (mG) and the Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you limit your exposure to 0.5 mG to 2.5 mG. Here are a few examples of household electronic devices and their mG measurements:
It’s important to note that your proximity to these devices is also a factor. These measurements were taken at a distance of three feet away. The closer you are to these electronics the higher the mG.
The recommended safe level from the EPA is under 2.5mG.
This table shows the mG measurement results of a study from the EPA on various household devices.
We can see here that some devices we use regularly at a close distance, such as computers and microwaves exceed the recommended 2.5mG exposure.
Microwaves are one of the biggest emitters in your home. They're still dangerous despite the Government's efforts of setting strict standards for the amount of energy a microwave can emit.
Microwaves contain seals to block the harmful frequencies emitted from them, but as the microwave ages, those seals begin to fail, allowing high levels of EMFs to escape into your home. The older the microwave the more dangerous it is.
While a frequency of above 10 hertz can begin to cause potential health risks, the frequency inside a microwave oven is 2.45 billion hertz! When you are three feet away from a microwave, you are exposed to up to 25 mG of EMF. This high level of exposure can cause harmful side effects including:

You don’t have to live without your microwave or your favorite appliance, but it's extremely important to consider how you use them in order to limit you and your family's exposure to EMFs. Protect yourself by researching how to lower your home's EMF danger levels.
